Our Campus

The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is part of the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). UMB is the founding campus of the University System of Maryland and is Maryland’s only public health, law, and human services university. UMB is not the same as the University of Maryland, College Park, which is home to its own undergraduate programs and Big Ten athletics.

You can refer to the campus map to see how the hospital integrates with the rest of campus. You might have meetings or events in other buildings on campus that are part of UMB.

Davidge Hall, opened in 1812, is the oldest building in the Western Hemisphere continuously used for medical education.

University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC)

UMMC is the flagship of the University of Maryland Medical System. Established in 1823 in partnership with the first public medical school in the country, all attending physicians at UMMC are also faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. This fact sheet will give you more specific information and highlights about our esteemed facility. We also encourage you to check out the additional information and videos on the GME website about why we’re a great choice for your residency!

The Neurology department is located on the 4th, 5th and 7th floors of the hospital. On the 4th floor you can find our neuro intermediate care unit, the 5th floor houses our neuro floor, and the 7th floor our neurocritical care unit. We have 3 inpatient teams- the Stroke service, CNS service (general inpatient neurology) and Consult service. More details on each of our services can be found here. A walking bridge connects UMMC to the Baltimore VA, where we also provide consult services and work in neurology clinics.

Across the street from the hospital, we have the Paca Pratt building, where most of our administrative offices are located and where we typically go for noon conference and free lunch! If you’re in need of nourishment at other times, the first floor of the hospital has many food options, including a 24 hour Au Bon Pain and Subway, pizza, sushi, ramen, plus our great cafeteria.

We also keep our Resident Library stocked with coffee and snacks when you need a quick pick-me-up, and periodically throughout the day you might smell freshly baked cookies coming from The Great Cookie located just below our neurology floor!

James Frenkil Building at Eutaw Street

The outpatient clinic is located in the Frenkil Building, walking distance from both UMMC and Paca Pratt. There are several other specialties with their clinics in this building, including Rheumatology, Nephrology, ENT, and the Hearing & Balance Center.

James Frenkil was a 1937 graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School, and in 1995 donated his Eutaw Street office building to the med school who named it in his honor. When he passed away in 2009 at 96 he was, at the time, one of the oldest living graduates of the medical school.
