Baltimore City

The University of Maryland Medical Center is located in the heart of downtown Baltimore.

Baltimore City itself is appoximately 92 square miles in size and made up of 9 geographic regions and over 200 different neighborhoods. Our residents live all over the city, including areas of Federal Hill, Ridgely’s Delight, Canton, Mount Vernon, Hampden, and Patterson Park. There is quite literally something for everyone in the city - whether you are looking for an area near the water, a quiet place teeming with historical significance, or a suburban oasis, all of these can be found within Baltimore.

As far as cities go, Baltimore is car-friendly. There can be traffic (especially during major events) but it’s fairly easy to get around via car on a daily basis. Uber and Lyft are prevalent if you don’t have a car of your own. Public transportation includes buses, light rail, and a subway line. The city also has several scooter companies to service the area - just remember to wear a helmet!

You don’t need to leave the city to see some pretty cool stuff. We’ve got the Inner Harbor with a promenade that extends 8 miles around the water and gives accessibility to countless restaurants and attractions - like the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, or the Historic Ships. Cross the street and climb the hill to Federal Hill Park to take in the view and have a picnic. Head to Fort McHenry to see what inspired Francis Scott Key. Want to support the arts? We’ve got the Baltimore Musuem of Art and The Walters Art Museum (both of which are free to visit), The Hippodrome Theatre, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. If sports are what you’re after, cheer on the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards or the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Looking to get out and explore? It’s quick to hop on the highway and leave the city behind. Maryland has everything nearby: in 30 to 45 minutes you can be on a farm picking seasonal fruit, hiking on the beautiful NCR trail or in Patapsco Valley State Park, strolling along the City Dock in Annapolis, or checking out Maryland wineries and the only Guinness brewery in the US. Want to go farther? Head east to Ocean City and sit on the beach or go to Assateague Island to see the ponies. Go west and you will find historic Frederick and Monocacy National Battlefield with great restaurants and loads of Civil War history.

If you need to travel beyond the immediate area, we have MARC trains and an Amtrak station, so it’s quite easy to get to not just the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area but the entire East Coast. Baltimore is also home to the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), just a 15-20 minute drive from downtown. Our light rail system also has a stop at BWI airport, as well as both MARC and Amtrak trains.
