GME Funding
Currently, the hospital offers employees $500 per calendar year for residents and fellows to use for continuing education – but you must be employed for 6 months before it becomes available to you.
For PGY1s and brand new fellows, that means you won’t be eligible until December or January, depending on your start date.
These funds do not roll forward. This is a use-it-or-lose-it situation. If you don’t use the full $500 by December 31st, it zeroes out to become a new pot of $500 on January 1st. It will never roll forward to increase in balance.
For this reason, we ALWAYS try and get you to use this money FIRST, if possible. Do not ever leave free money on the table – find something to buy with these funds each calendar year.
The use for this money is based on policies set forth by the hospital. You can use it for books, quiz banks, Step 3 registration, conferences, etc.
You cannot use it for anything that’s required for your position. For example, because Step 3 isn’t required to be a resident, you can use this money to help with registration. You cannot use it for your board exam registration because that’s a requirement for you as a physician.
Below is the policy as well as the form you will need to have filled out.
If you are a resident, take the completed form to Jillian Iffland.
If you are a fellow, the completed form goes to Penelope Birckhead.
Once it is signed, you are responsible for uploading it to Infor Cloud Suite, as outlined below.

Department Funding
The department gives each trainee $500 per academic year to use for anything that might be needed; this is called your Book Fund. This money rolls forward from year to year, so theoretically residents can save it all and have $2000 available in your PGY4 year that you could use to cover the costs of your board exam registration. We highly recommend that you try to not touch this money if at all possible and save it for this purpose. Fellows also receive $500 per academic year. If you are in a multi-year fellowship program you will also receive $500 each year that roll forward.
The $500 is available starting on July 1st every year. So, if you don’t use it one year then as of July 1 of the next year you would have an additional $500 available on top of the previous balance.
Our department manages and controls these funds. If you want to use this money, reach out to Courtney and she will help you with the process. You will need to provide her with receipt(s) for what you purchased.
