Neurology Residency at Maryland

PGY1 Experience

Dr. Christina Koch (Director for the Preliminary Internal Medicine program) and Dr. Danielle Baek (overall Program Director of the Internal Medicine program), put together a power point about the experience that you’ll have as a PGY1 Neurology resident during your time with Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland.

Please note that as a Neurology Categorical program, you are a Neurology resident from day 1. We partner with our colleagues in Internal Medicine to provide you with the ACGME required experiences for your PGY1. They share some of the administrative duties with us for the first year of your residency.

Required Rotations

Our UMMC residency site has more information on all of our rotations for each year of our residency program. Dr. Prachi Mehndiratta, the program director for our Neurology Residency Program, will give a presentation during your interview day with additional information about your time as a Neurology resident.

UMMC Trainee Unionization

In June 2024, residents and fellows at UMMC voted to be represented by the American Federation of Teachers (“AFT”). The vote was conducted and certified by the National Labor Relations Board. This was not an unusual occurrence; you may be aware that residents and fellows in many other graduate medical education programs have voted to unionize over the past few years.

The hospital and the union ratified their first collective bargaining agreement in September 2025. This agreement is in effect through June 30, 2028. During orientation the union will be given time to meet with trainees to review information related to membership.
