Morning Report

Location: Van Buskirk Neurology Library (4th Floor South Hospital)

Time: 7:45 AM - 8:15 AM

‍The goal of Morning Report is to discuss pathophysiology, anatomy and differential diagnosis at each stage of the evaluation.  We also work on development of management skills of specific conditions and situations.  At times we can also address ethical issues or other questions that arise that may not be commonly addressed during work rounds.

It is expected that ALL residents on the inpatient services attend.  If there is an urgent patient issue, this can obviously be dealt with but all efforts should be made to allocate time to attend morning report.

The only residents not expected are those on vacation, NCCU or Hopkins rotations.

Guidelines for Presentation

The presentation should be very different from a work rounds presentation (will vary depending on the case).  You should always start with a 1-liner about the case with information on the age, gender, chief complaint, and duration/onset. (e.g., 56 year old man presenting with 5-day history of diplopia).

‍After the 1-liner is presented, residents should ask questions to obtain more of a history.  The aim of this time is to develop a framework for localization of the chief complaint as well as a differential diagnosis based on the localization and onset.

‍Imaging/labs should be presented only in the last 5-10 minutes of the case.  The only exception to this is if the imaging itself is an important consideration as part of the differential.

‍There should be NO extraneous talking.  If you need to return an urgent page – leave the room and go to the General team room.Everyone should be engaged in the discussion.  If there are emergent patient care issues that require you to be on the computer – go to the General team room.  This should NOT be a common occurrence.  Simply wanting a few more minutes to work on your daily notes is not an acceptable reason to not be involved in morning report.

Specialized Morning Reports

A few days a month there are specialized morning reports that are focused on different topics.  These are outlined below:

  • BAT Morning Report1st Thursday of each month.  Any issues with Brain Attack Team patients or procedures will be discussed.

  • ICU Morning Report: 4th Tuesday of each month.  Stroke and General Team PGY-4 residents on service are responsible for having a case ready for discussion. This usually involves a case to discuss management of acute neurological issues.

  • Patient Safety Morning Report3rd Thursday per month, focused on improving care and assuring continued patient safety. Neuroscience nursing and QI officer will also attend.
