Materials for Study

‍Each resident should also have at the beginning of residency:

Specialized Midday Didactics

Chairman's Rounds

Time: Mondays at 11:30 AM (3 weeks/month)

Location: Paca Pratt Large Neurology Conference Room

An interesting case is presented to the Department Chair for discussion. Every effort will be made to present a current inpatient, with the possibility of examining the patient as a team.  The Senior Residents on service are both responsible for having a case ready to be discussed.

Resident Meeting

Time: Monday at 11:30 AM once a month

Location: Paca Pratt Large Neurology Conference Room

Expected Attendance: All residents, Program Director, and Program Coordinator

A forum for discussion of any issues related to the residency program or neurology services.

Journal Club

Time: Approximately monthly during the academic year as part of midday conference

Faculty Advisor: Michael Phipps

All PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents will be assigned a date to lead the discussion of an important recently published article.  Faculty experts in both the clinical topic, as well as experts in research trial design and analysis will be present to facilitate discussion. See Journal Club Guidelines for further information.

Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Conference

Time: Every 4th Monday at 11:30 AM, the week after the PGY-4 residents’ rotation switch day.

Location: Typically Paca Pratt learning center on the Lower Level

Expected Attendance: All Residents. Fellows, Faculty; Neurology patient safety officer, and other staff also invited.

The goal of the conference is to provide a forum for the department to review patient outcomes with a goal of identifying opportunities for improvements in patient’s safety and quality of care in a non-punitive setting.

The PGY-4 residents on the General and Stroke services the prior month will present:

  • Patient statistics for the month, including number of admission by diagnosis, number of consults, transfers to ICU, unexpected escalations or care or intubations, any deaths (expected or unexpected), readmissions as well as other information (see M&M Presentation Template on the M&M page for more information)

Senior resident will also pick one case to discuss more in-depth that involves a system issue or learning point that can be applied to improve care for future patients (~10-15 min discussion).
