As far back as I can remember, I have always wanted to study the brain. As an undergraduate I concentrated in Neurobiology and Behavior and I worked in a lab studying axon guidance in the olfactory system. I then moved on to graduate school in Illinois studying the molecular and genomic basis of learning and memory in songbirds. When entering into my clinical years, I seriously considered Psychiatry as well, but I love localization and the relationship between structure and function, so Neurology just made more sense.
I did a Sub-I in neurology at Maryland when I was a fourth year in medical school, and I was hooked. I loved the residents with whom I worked, and I thought the hospital was really beautiful (if insanely confusing initially). However, it was the faculty that made me want to do my residency here. The faculty are very caring, devoted to both their patients and to the education of the residents. I learned so much in my short rotation that I was excited to see how much I could learn in four years. Now that I am deep in my PGY4 year, this has been proven time and time again. Every day I am impressed by my mentors and my peers. From top to bottom, every person I work with seems to be striving to be the absolute best neurologist, teacher, and mentor they can be.
When I am not here in the hospital, I spend a lot of time with my one year old daughter, spending time out doors. I also enjoy board and video games, anything outdoorsy (camping, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking), crafts and spending time with my local friends and family. Baltimore has been a great place to live so far, and I hope to explore it even more as I have more time during residency.
