I was born in Karachi, Pakistan and moved to the US when I was four. I grew up in Edison, NJ and attended Rutgers New Brunswick for undergrad followed by Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. I majored in Cell Biology and Neuroscience and minored in English. During my undergrad my interest in neurology grew after reading short excerpts from the writings of the late Oliver Sacks. As a first- and second-year medical student I spent time shadowing different neurologists which reaffirmed my resolve to pursue neurology residency.
The University of Maryland Neurology program was the first program I interviewed at during the interview season. I was pleasantly surprised by the collegial atmosphere of my interview day and the genuine interest all the attendings showed in my application. I was further impressed with the programs structure of graduated autonomy and emphasis on didactic learning through morning report, noon conference, and neurology bootcamp.
Baltimore has been a wonderful city to train in with an incredibly diverse population. Also, it is pretty cool to work within walking distance of where the Ravens and Orioles play!
