Day Float

The aim of this rotation is twofold:

  • Offload the workload on the inpatient services (Stroke and Consult) in the morning to allow teams to finish rounds/urgent tasks and attend IDR

  • Allow time for scholarly pursuits

Who will cover this role: Either a PGY-3 or PGY-4. Later in the year may have PGY-2’s.

Timing and hours: Mon-Fri 07:00-17:00. The Tiger role to sign into is: xxUMMC Neurology Day Float

Not all weeks are covered (e.g. beginning of the year, holiday period, AAN etc.)

Schedule

Morning (7a-11:30a)

  • Log into the Day Float role in Tiger and hold the BAT phone.

  • Responsibilities:

    • See BATs

    • See urgent consults (TRU and ED)

    • Triaging - Keep a written note of all the non-urgent consults that come through with the following details: time of consult, consulting team, consult question, and add patient to the relevant list. Let the teams know that the patient will be seen in the afternoon. Pass this along to the consult Sr at 11:30 (including Wed)

    • Present your cases from the day prior

Midday (11:30a-12:30p or 12:30p-1:30p on Wed)

  • Attend noon conference and lunch

Afternoon

Finish up notes, and present new cases to the teams. If you are not able to present to the attending, sign your patient out to the senior on each team.

Use the rest of the afternoon to spend time in subspecialty clinic, work on research, or attend conferences (epilepsy surgery, bleed rounds, fellowship didactics, stroke conference etc.)

On Wednesdays, attendance at Grand Rounds and Case Conference is expected
