I chose neurology for many reasons. First, I found it the most interesting subject in my pre-clinical years and the coolest clerkship as a third year. Second, having been born and raised in Alabama, I felt called toward of neurology, because of the lack of neurologists in rural and underserved areas, and I would like to help fill that void after I finish my training. Third, I was so excited that the field was on the cusp of so many advancements and research, and I wanted to be part of that change.
I chose Maryland because I wanted to be in a rigorous academic program where I would learn and see ample pathology but also be in a program that felt more like a family. The friendly culture of Maryland completely blew me away. I absolutely love my co-residents. Before COVID, we would meet up all the time to celebrate birthdays or watch the Bachelor every week. All of the faculty want to educate you and are willing to meet with you individually. I remember on my interview day Dr. Cronin went out of her way to help my husband, who is an internal medicine categorical resident, get an interview here (and he ended up matching here!). I remember thinking to myself “Hey… I’m just an applicant, and she did all this for me… I can’t imagine what she’ll do for me if I actually come here!” In addition, the senior residents go above and beyond to make you feel welcome and to encourage and teach you. In addition, the nurses, advanced proactive providers, pharmacists, and support staff are amazing. Everyone works together as a team and helps everyone else out.
When I’m not at work, I’m usually hanging out with my two cats: Everest and Duchess. If you ever need television or podcast recommendations or want to discuss anything Lord of the Rings related, I’m your girl! I’m also always looking for a new Zumba buddy or someone to compete with on the Peloton board! And when the pandemic ends, we have to have a board game night!
