I first became interested in the brain at a young age. Growing up my sister had a brain tumor, and in seeing how both the neurosurgeons and neurologists helped my sister piqued my interest in the brain and its inner workings. As I got older this interest did wane and initially going into medical school, I wanted to go into family medicine. This all changed during my neuroanatomy course where I learned how one can localize a lesion based on the exam. I love to problem solve, and I realized neurology might be the right specialty for me. This was solidified on my rotation third year of medical school where I was able to apply this problem solving to real cases in addition to having a preceptor who made the process of learning clinical neurology both educational and exciting.
In choosing a residency program to train there were many aspects of the program at Maryland that ultimately made me want to come here, from the beautiful hospital to the amazing resources that we have as residents in addition to the autonomy that we are given so early in our training. Even with all these superlatives what truly sold me on the program were the people. In speaking to a variety of individuals from residents to senior faculty on interview day I realized how genuine and supportive everyone one was in wanting you to succeed in training as a neurologist.
My interests outside the hospital are varied to include running, biking, bouldering, and reading. I have found that the city of Baltimore allows me the freedom to do the above activities as well as many others. From taking a run around the inner harbor, to biking to Fort McHenry, to going bouldering in Hampden (a Baltimore neighborhood) or exploring the vibrant food scene, there is always something fun and interesting to do. Baltimore has a charm to it, and after moving here I definitely understand why it is coined “Charm City.”
